The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has officially launched the 2025 National Chocolate Week, an initiative designed to promote the consumption of Ghanaian chocolate and other cocoa-based products. The launch event took place on Friday, 7th February 2025, at the GTA Head Office in Accra, under the theme “Eat Chocolate, Stay Healthy, Grow Ghana”, with the sub-theme “Chocolate for All: Taste, Share, and Care.”
Speaking on behalf of GTA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, Deputy Chief Executive (Operations) Mr. Ekow Sampson emphasized the significance of the event. He highlighted that National Chocolate Week, which began as National Chocolate Day in 2005, has successfully redefined Valentine’s Day in Ghana by promoting cocoa products as symbols of love and wellness. Over the years, through collaboration with the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Cocoa Processing Company (CPC), and other stakeholders, the celebration has expanded into a week-long nationwide event.
Mr. Sampson stressed that the initiative supports Ghana’s domestic tourism campaigns by encouraging the consumption of local products while reducing dependence on imported goods. He also underscored the numerous health benefits of chocolate, including its ability to lower blood pressure, enhance cognitive function, and reduce stress. He called on hotels, guest houses, and food and beverage businesses to incorporate chocolate-themed dishes into their menus and offer complimentary chocolates to customers on 14th February to commemorate the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Director of Research and Development at COCOBOD, Mr. Michael Ekow Amoah, outlined measures taken to boost cocoa production and per capita consumption. He acknowledged progress made in recent years but emphasized the need for further action to increase local demand.
“We must appreciate the richness of Ghana’s cocoa by increasing our consumption of premium Ghanaian chocolate,” he stated.
As part of the celebration, a diverse range of activities has been scheduled, including exhibitions, a street float, a quiz competition, and visits to religious institutions and cocoa-growing communities. Additionally, GTA’s regional offices will actively engage in these activities, ensuring broad participation across the country.
As the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, Ghana remains committed to adding value to its cocoa sector. The National Chocolate Week serves as a key platform for raising awareness, enhancing appreciation, and driving demand for locally produced chocolate, reinforcing Ghana’s position as a global leader in cocoa excellence
